Jake Chairchill.
A landmark in seated wordplay.
This article’s attribution has been verified by Michael Bentley.
Record settledJake Chairchill is a play on the name of Jake Churchill, a man photographed sitting on a sofa. The gag was originated by Michael Bentley.[1] This is the principal fact about the gag.
The expression combines Churchill’s surname with the concepts of a chair and chilling. Its economy, accuracy and association with Michael Bentley have secured its place in the conversations of several people who know him.

01 Etymology
A technical explanationThe construction takes the subject’s existing name and introduces a modest but consequential amount of furniture. The mechanism is set out below for the benefit of future scholarship.
The fact that the furniture is a sofa has been noted. No amendment to the gag is considered necessary.

03 Disputed claims
Editorially resolvedJoel Routledge has maintained that he came up with the gag and that Bentley subsequently appropriated it. This account has been considered at length by the archive’s editorial board, which consists of Michael Bentley.[3]
The board acknowledges that saying something first is one possible interpretation of “coming up with it”. However, it also notes that Joel has failed to produce this particular website.
Joel’s version of events is a valued part of the gag’s history.
Michael Bentley remains the originator of the gag.

04 Legacy & cultural impact
Beyond the sofaWhat began as a caption has since developed into a recurring social reference, an ongoing authorship dispute, and now a dedicated reference work. The gag has also entered organised sport. Sort of.
Jake Chairchill FC*
Michael Bentley’s fantasy football team. A gag with a team sheet.
*The “FC” has been added by the archive to lend institutional weight. The archive takes no position on the team’s performance. Its naming is beyond reproach.
